M. Night Shyamalan

Born August 6, 1970 - Pondicherry, India

This young director, known for his dark stories and surprise endings, was born in India but raised in a suburb of Philadelphia. Even at a young age he had a passion for film, and was given a Super-8 camera when he was eight. He was sent to the Episcopal Academy, a private school, and graduated from New York University. He still lives in Pennsylvania, is an avid comic book fan, and in 2002 became the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood ($5 million) for Signs.

His movies tend to be laced with religious themes, either obvious or buried. He makes a cameo appearance in all his movies, and many times that character is negative or otherwise banal in some way (the most tortured was his active character in Signs). He also uses reflections of people or images, sometimes to shock or drive home a critical point of the plot.

Personal Quote: "My hope is we broke so many rules we created a new rule."
