John Wayne
Born: May 26, 1907 - Winterset, Iowa
This larger-than-life western tough guy was born Marion Morrison in the small town of Winterset, Iowa. His father's health problems forced them move to California, where Marion rode a horse to school (back when that was even possible!). He failed admission to Annapolis but got into USC on a football scholarship. Working a summer job as a prop man he caught the eye of the director John Ford.
After many, many forgettable westerns his breakthrough was the film Stagecoach in 1939. Best known for his western films such as The Alamo, Fort Apache, and Rio Grande, he did do other genres. He even played Genghis Khan!
After his death, Orange County, California's airport was renamed in his honor.
Personal Quote: "When people say a John Wayne picture got bad reviews, I always wonder if they know it is a redundant sentence. hell, I don't care. People like my pictures and that's all that counts."
